Newsflash!

We have successfully secured further European funding for a new project, QATRAIN 4 Students (Q4S). Q4S will provide support for disabled young people undertaking courses in mainstream VET by helping them to identify barriers to learning and providing them with strategies and practical resources to overcome these barriers.

Support to help teachers and trainers eliminate these barriers has been developed in the QATRAIN and QATRAIN2 projects. Q4S will transfer this conceptual framework and support materials for direct use by those most directly affected: disabled learners themselves, thereby improving their VET outcomes and qualifications, so enlarging the pool of trained recruits available to employers.

Employability and Disability

Dr Val Chapman, Director of the Centre for Inclusive Learning Support (CILS) at the University of Worcester, has succeeded in bidding for a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship Scheme project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The project, entitled 'Employability and Disability' will provide a sector wide initiative that will lead to enhanced graduate employability by equipping disabled students with skills to match employability competencies. Drawing on the wide range of experience of three National Teaching Fellows with recognised expertise in the field of disability, the project will build on the knowledge acquired by the establishment of the existing heavily used resource, SCIPS (Strategies for Creating Inclusive Programmes of Study) to develop a new web resource, USEMYABILITY.

This new resource will help academic and careers staff, employers and work based mentors to understand the particular needs of, and challenges for, disabled students in developing employability skills, competencies and attributes as mapped in 'Student Employability Profiles' (Kubler et al, 2006).

In offering guidance to adjusting practice, the resource will make a significant contribution to institutional strategic priorities across the sector in relation to the Disability Equality Duty (applicable to all HEIs in the UK) and to the national strategy of encouraging employers to employ more disabled persons.
